How to do a metal stamping ?

we are a wholesale prototype metal stamping Supplier, now we tell you how do a metal stamping.

Usually, metal stamping uses cold metal and places it between molds, although some processes use heated materials. Pressing materials to shape the metal into the desired shape. Usually, these shapes create larger creative tools or components.

The stamping molds inside the machine either cut metal or form metal. These molds have specific designs for each project. Although making a mold takes some time, once the mold is completed, the stamping process will occur quickly.

This process allows for the production of large quantities of identical parts. Stamping may be a step in the creation of many parts, or it can serve as the only step.

Stamping type

The type of stamping used depends on the desired finished product. Precision, hot metal, and progressive dies are some of the most commonly used stamping processes.

  1. Precision metal stamping

Precision stamping produces raised images or 3D parts, and produces finished products with strict tolerances. Compared to other forms of stamping, precision stamping involves less material movement between machines, making the process faster.

A variant of this process is micro precision stamping. This method can manufacture complex parts for the electronics or medical industry, with thicknesses as thin as 0.002 to 0.005 inches.

  1. Hot metal stamping

Hot metal stamping is the process of forming metal using extreme heat. Metal boron steel is heated to above 1700 degrees Fahrenheit and then quenched in a mold. The result is high-strength, lightweight steel components.

One of the main advantages of hot metal stamping parts is their high tensile strength. Once the process is completed, the tensile strength range ranges from approximately 50 kilopounds per square inch (KSI) to approximately 200 KSI. Hot stamping also allows you to shape all complex parts at once, which means fewer welding or other connection measures. Parts produced using this method will not experience rebound and warping like other high-strength steel formed parts. Unfortunately, the hardened part is difficult to cut, making post molding trimming and cutting a challenge. For these processes, you usually need a powerful laser.

To perform hot metal stamping, you need several pieces of equipment, including:

A heating system capable of heating metals to the necessary temperature

Sufficient cooling system

Automatic processing system, as the completed parts are initially too hot to touch

Highly heat-resistant impact resistant tool materials

Hydraulic/servo press with dwell function

Your stamping system must obviously meet all safety requirements.

  1. Progressive metal stamping

Progressive stamping, also known as progressive die stamping, passes metal parts through multiple workstations, each of which performs separate operations on the metal. During these different stages, the metal sheets always adhere to the elongated material. The last machine cuts the finished product from the metal strip.

Progressive die stamping is a good choice when selecting manufacturing methods for long-term processes that require mass production. This mold lasts for a long time and the process generates the least amount of waste.

When creating larger parts that may require different presses, you will need to use transfer molds for stamping. This process differs from progressive stamping in only a few small aspects.
